If you are viewing this site you are probably interested in
buying one of our pace sticks and will have a good idea as to
the history and function of pace sticks, so we'll not tell you
how to suck eggs.

For those of you who want a bit more here goes.

The Links to the left and right will give you all the history you could want.

Briefly though, it's the job of the Regimental Sergeant Major to carry a 'Pace Stick'. The Artillery originally came up with a 'Gunner's Stick' and used it to measure the distance between guns on the battlefield. It did not take long for it to be adapted to measure the length of the pace taken by soldiers so as to get them all pacing at the same time.

The Pace Stick is two pieces of wood hinged at the top with a setting bar to determine the opening between the two points where they come into contact the ground. The stick is spun from point to point as the RSM marches and thus determines the length and speed of the pace for him and his marching soldiers.
